8-day Kayaking trip, Dec. 31, 2024-Jan. 7, 2025

Every day, in every way, this trip surpassed our expectations! Our principal guide, Freddy, was a walking encyclopedia! His knowledge of Cuban history, culture, geography, music was astounding.  Walking around La Habana with Freddy the morning after our arrival, he "introduced" us to some of his heroes, for instance the statue of Eusebio Leal the revered Cuban historian whose tireless, years long efforts resulted in the restoration of Old Havana and its status as a UNESCO world heritage site. Freddy's knowledge of the history, architectural influence and importance of every building deepened my love for Cuba. The following day we began our five days of kayaking, each with different challenges and surroundings - mangrove, open sea, hidden coves, fresh water reservoir, and a river. Our kayak guide Jorge and the van driver Alexi assured our safety at all times. They rounded out our convivial group, as the five of us enjoyed Cuban food together in a variety of settings. (Dottie and I were the only ones on this trip, while other companies we considered required minimum participation of six or seven persons.) 1st of all a Huge Thank You to all the Staff @  Cubania Travel for organising such a Wonderful Holiday to Cuba. We landed at Havana & spent a few days being guided around this decaying & yet vibrant city which started with a fantastic Tour in a 1950's Classic American Convertible, followed by a City Walking Tour & then a visit to the Fine Arts Museum .lunch in a couple of local Paladars [Dona Eutima & Jibaro]. In the evening we visited FAC & La Esquina de Cuba for supper before moving on to Vinales with our guide Rolanda & our trusty driver Jesus. I've never seen 'roads' like these bad boys en route - plenty of work there for the 'Pot Hole filling crew.!!
On the way we visited the Las Terrazas Community for a guided walk around this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve followed by lunch before arriving in Vinales mid afternoon, in time for a relaxing cocktail.
The following day, Xmas Day involved a Horse Back adventure to Joses's Tobacco Farm to sample his produce washed down by a home made Mojito -Fresh Limes/Lemon / Honey / Rum & Soda - delicious.
Our evening was a visit to a local Eco-Farm [Paraiso] food / drink & hospitality 1st class, unfortunately we were a little late to view the crops growing.
Next day we were on the road again for a journey to Cuenfuegos, stopping at Playa Giron for a morning's kayaking with a local guide following by Lobster & Drinks in a local waterfront restaurant....memorable.
Cuenfuegos really was just a stopping off point en route to Trinidad, probably our least favourite part, as very decaying, busy & full of 'vendors' selling their wares.!!
We did however get the opportunity of walking to the Waterfalls on the Vegas Grandes Trail in the Topes de Collantes - hard work but thoroughly enjoyable. We ended the evening  with a Rum Tasting Session @ Esquina 373 Restaurant having had The Funniest 1 on 1 [ or 1on 4 as it happened] Salsa Class with a local guide - He must have wondered where we got our co-ordination from.....
Off we go again this time to the Melia Buena Vista - Cayo Santa Maria over the 40km[ish] Causeway via Remedios.
Very relaxing / lovely weather / friendly staff. Food OK but rooms a little dated. All Inclusive.
Finally after a few lovely days to wind down we drove back to Havana for the last 36 Hrs via Santa Clara where we hoped to visit the Che Guevara Museum, alas closed for the holidays.
Our final night was back at Jesus Maria 7 - An Oasis in the Old Town & Evening spent at La Guarida for supper.
Then it was a few Hrs of last minute shopping, a couple of drinks & then off to the Airport for our flight back to the UK via Paris....
We had the most memorable holiday, full of action, plenty of laughs & a great Guide, necessary over in Cuba but would highly recommend [+ Cubania who I can't fault]. Thanks Folks

Beyond expectations! We requested kayaking and birding. All our needs, safety, equipment, water, meals were met. This trip went beyond birds and boats. Old Havana to Trinidad. Our Cuba holiday was incredible. Our expectations were exceeded by far.
The team in Cuba was fantastic.
Food was fantastic, the cocktails a real treat, the Salsa lesson a enjoyable experience, the casa particulares were fabulous, all the other things we did was a wonderful experience and last but ot least the peolpe in Cuba are very nice.
It was a perfect holiday.
