Why 2025 is the Most Exciting Time to Visit Cuba Yet

Why 2025 is the Most Exciting Time to Visit Cuba Yet

Despite recent challenges and a new President in the USA, Cuba is surviving!

Read the news and you’d be forgiven for thinking the country is on the verge collapse.  But those of us who live in Cuba, know there are green shoots everywhere, and a more uplifting story to tell; one of resilience and creativity.  Cuba is thriving in remarkable and unexpected ways. In fact, the island’s creativity has been awarded Leading Cultural Destination in the Caribbean by the World Travel Awards, and for good reason.

A Creative Renaissance in the Face of Adversity

Walk through Havana’s streets today, and you’ll feel its unmistakable energy – one that goes far beyond the classic images of vintage American cars cruising past colonial architecture (though yes, these are still gloriously present). The city’s magic is often hidden behind a dilapidated building or up a steep concrete staircase…venture behind the surface of the city you’ll discover hidden bars, incredible workshops, world-class restaurants, amazing dance venues.  The city has always nurtured creativity and you can experience it for yourself by booking a group tour or a tailor made trip with Cubania Travel

The Restaurant Revolution

Some of the most exciting changes are happening in the private restaurant sector, Cuba’s famous paladar restaurants.  They’ve been around for a while but the standard Cuban rice, beans and chicken dishes traditionally served all over the country are now being replaced by innovative new recipes.  New importation rules mean that paladares (private restaurants) can now access quality ingredients like never before. The result? A burst of culinary creativity where innovative chefs are reimagining Cuban classics and creating entirely new fusion cuisines. From simple farm-to-table country restaurants serving hearty organic food, to intimate rooftop venues and sophisticated dining rooms in restored Havana mansions, the variety and quality of dining options have expanded dramatically.

Coffee Culture & Contemporary Spaces

Cafe culture has returned to Cuba! Cafecito has always been the social glue of any Cuban gathering so it makes sense that the hip new coffee shops in Havana are becoming creative hubs where young Cubans and visitors alike gather to work, socialise and enjoy a cafecito or a fresh squeezed juice. Many serve sandwiches and simple vegetarian and vegan food too.  These aren’t just cafes – they’re manifestations of Cuba’s new entrepreneurial spirit, often doubling as art galleries, live music venues, or co-working spaces.

Art Scene in Overdrive

Cuba’s art scene is having a moment right now.  Maybe it’s the Biennal effect ( Havana’s 2024/25 Art Biennial entitled Shared Horizons runs till the end of February 2025. Find out more here Instagram )  Contemporary galleries exhibiting young talent are flourishing, and street art has transformed neighbourhoods. Artists in Cuba have always pushed boundaries, mixing traditional Cuban aesthetics with modern influences, creating works that reflect both Cuba’s rich cultural heritage and its search for a place on the political and economic world map.  Pop-up exhibitions in unexpected spaces – from colonial ruins to private homes – are adding an element of surprise and discovery to the art experience.

Music: The Heartbeat Gets Stronger

While Cuba has always been synonymous with incredible music, the current scene is particularly vibrant. Traditional son and salsa mixed with contemporary genres, creating fresh sounds that honour the past while embracing the future. DJ’s working with live musicians to create innovative Afro-House grooves.   Underground electronic music parties, jazz festivals, and impromptu street performances create a constant soundtrack to daily life.  Check Cuba’s newness in AM:PM’s excellent playlist.

Architectural Heritage Meets Modern Purpose

The city’s stunning colonial architecture continues to be one of its biggest draws, but what’s exciting is how these historic spaces are being repurposed. Art deco mansions are becoming boutique hotels, colonial warehouses are transforming into cultural centres, and crumbling facades are being carefully restored to their former glory while housing thoroughly modern enterprises within.

A Time of Transformation

Yes, Cuba still faces challenges. Power cuts haven’t disappeared, WiFi is still limited and slow.   Certain daily conveniences we take for granted won’t be available in Havana.  Cuba takes you out of your comfort zone and that’s the beauty of any trip to the magic island.  There’s something special about visiting Cuba,  a country which has been doing things differently for decades.  Any trip to Cuba feels like a trip to another planet, an exciting sensory immersion into Cuban music, rhythm, colour and rich tropical flavours.

The comfortable predictability of other Caribbean destinations has its place, but for travellers seeking authenticity, creativity, and the thrill of discovering a place in the midst of remarkable change, there’s never been a better time to visit Cuba.
