Something shifts when you escape the distractions of the modern world – the signal drops, the screens go dark, and all that’s left is the rhythm of nature and the warmth of human connection.
This is Cuba. And this is our brand new trip – Hike and Kayak Cuba’s Wild Side – an adventure into the heart of one of the most ecologically rich islands on Earth.
We designed the trip to showcase our favourites spots, the bits of Cuba which don’t get seen when you’re sitting on a bus or even driving in a classic car. I wrote this blog to highlight some of these amazing places, and to remind you that sometimes the biggest wins in life come when you step a little out of your comfort zone. When you choose the kayak over the tour bus, the hiking trail over the highway.
Where Nature Takes Centre Stage
Once you leave Havana’s colonial streets behind, Cuba shows you its wild side.
The Zapata Swamp—one of the largest and best-preserved wetlands in the Caribbean – opens up a world few get to see. As a designated Ramsar site and UNESCO biosphere reserve, this ecosystem shelters flamingos, spoonbills, crocodiles, and even the world’s smallest bird, the bee hummingbird. Kayaking through its mangrove channels and shallow coastal waters feels like entering a secret world, untouched and very much alive. An abundance of silvery bonefish and tarpon flash past as you paddle through the watery wilderness. Not a human in sight.
Mountains, Waterfalls, and Fireflies
As the wetlands give way to the Escambray Mountains, the adventure continues. You’ll paddle across Hanabanilla Lake, cradled by steep forested slopes, and trek through El Nicho Natural Park, where waterfalls tumble into crystal-clear pools and the air is filled with birdsong.
At the Rio Negro eco-lodge, under the stars, you’ll experience something rare: total disconnection. No Wi-Fi. No distractions. Just the orchestra of night birds and insects, and fireflies providing the light show. It’s a moment of pure presence—where nature takes centre stage and time slows down.
20% of Cuba’s land is protected—a testament to the country’s commitment to preserving its biodiversity. This journey takes you right into the heart of that commitment.
Trekking Through Cuba’s Green Heart
We leave our kayaks and board a Russian truck for a bumpy, exhilarating ride through the misty mountains of Topes de Collantes. The truck drops you off in the middle of nowhere. From there, your hiking adventure begins! As you descend into the valley, the trail winds into the forest, past coffee plantations and mango trees heavy with fruit. Deeper into the forest, the thunder of falling water grows louder – until you reach Salto de Rocio, a cascade surrounded by lush greenery. A short hike further leads to Pozo del Venado (Deer Pool), where a waterfall spills into an emerald pool, perfect for a refreshing swim. Along the way, you might spot Cuban trogons, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers flitting through the canopy.
Culture That Lives and Breathes
Cuba’s soul isn’t just in its landscapes – it’s carved into its cities. Havana and Trinidad, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are living museums of colonial architecture, music, and resilience. In Havana, you’ll wander through pastel-hued streets where every corner has a story. In Trinidad, time stands still, with cobbled alleys and sun-drenched plazas that echo with salsa and laughter.
These cities aren’t just beautiful – they’re deeply human. They remind you that travel isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about connection. With people. With place. With yourself.
Why This Trip Matters
In a world that’s always online, Cuba offers something different: the chance to unplug and truly be. To trade algorithms for waterfalls, notifications for flamingos, and endless scrolling for real, unfiltered experience.
This journey is for the curious. The seekers. The ones who want to feel the pulse of a place—not just see it.
So if you’re ready to kayak through mangrove channels, hike to waterfalls, sleep under the stars, and walk through cities that feel like poetry – Cuba is waiting.
And it’s not just a destination. It’s a revelation.
