Day 1: ARRIVAL IN HAVANA

  • Casa Particular, Havana

Welcome to Havana! You’ll be welcomed by a member of the Cubania Team at the airport and whisked to your hotel in Havana. If you’re coming from Europe, you’ll arrive quite late so, after you’ve checked into your accommodation, maybe grab a bite to eat close by and head for bed.

Day 2: GUIDED TOUR OF OLD AND NEW HAVANA

  • Casa Particular, Havana
  • Breakfast, Lunch

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up and take you on a tour of Havana, Cuba’s capital and the largest city in the Caribbean.  We set off in style, cruising through the streets of Havana in a 1950’s classic American car, everyday transportation for many Cubans.   Cubans are masters of restoring, re-using and re-cycling and these cars are testament to these skills!

We’ll cruise along the seafront and visit Revolution Square, getting a feel for other parts of the city before being dropped off in Old Havana for a walking tour.

Lunch in a local “paladar” restaurant and then time to explore more of Havana, either with the help of your guide or on your own.

Day 3: FREE DAY IN HAVANA

  • Casa particular, Havana
  • Breakfast

Today is free to spend as you wish.

You can continue exploring the fascinating narrow streets of the old town – full of life and interesting museums, cafes and little stores – or venture into Centro Habana or Vedado which are both a short walking distance away.

Lunch and dinner are not included today so you can either choose to eat at your casa or you can explore the many local “paladar” restaurants available.

Day 4: DRIVE TO VIÑALES

  • Casa particular, Viñales
  • Breakfast, Dinner

After breakfast we check out of our casa and set off on our first road trip.   We head West and to Cuba’s most famous valley, the Viñales Valley, a World Heritage Site for the beauty of the landscapes.    Dramatic and heavily forested “pincushion” mountains ( known locally as mogotes) pop out of the fertile valley floor.  Palm trees sway in the breeze and the local farmers are famous for growing Cuba’s finest cigar tobacco, lovingly tended in their small farms or “vegas”.

After the 3-hour drive, we arrive in time for lunch and a stroll around the town to get our bearings.   We’ll also visit the “Cueva del Indio” a stunning cave system with an underwater river before checking into our “casa” for the night.

In the late afternoon, we’ll take a short walk through the valley, passing tobacco farmers and learning about their crops.   Our destination is Rachel’s Finca Paraiso (Paradise Farm) where Rachel and her father have set up a fabulous organic restaurant overlooking the valley.   Enjoy one of her special “ecologic” mocktails and drink in the sunset over Viñales Valley as you eat home-cooked organic food straight from farm to table.

Day 5: VIÑALES VALLEY

  • Casa particular, Viñales
  • Breakfast

Today we explore Viñales Valley on foot, another of Cuba’s UNESCO World Heritage sites located in the Western province of Pinar del Rio.  This area is to cigars what France’s Bordeaux region is to wines and it is here that the tobacco plants are carefully harvested using traditional methods in order to create the world-class cigars for which Cuba is so famous.

Viñales has another-world quality, due to the unique mogotes, strange limestone hillocks that have been formed as a result of erosion during the Jurassic period around 160 million years ago.   Our walk takes us to a local fruit farm where you can try natural juices before scrambling up the mountainside to reach a natural tunnel which takes us through to another valley.   The scenery is Jurassic and dramatic.  In the afternoon you can explore Viñales town or get a day pass to enjoy the swimming pool at La Ermita Hotel.  In the evening enjoy live music in one of the bars along Viñales main street.

Day 6: VISIT LAS TERRAZAS BIOSPHERE RESERVE AND SWIM IN THE RIVER

  • La Moka Hotel or Casas Particulares
  • Breakfast, Lunch

After an early breakfast we head off to Las Terrazas Community, a biosphere reserve tucked away in the Sierra del Rosario Mountains, arriving in time for a late lunch.  The community is a natural area of around 5,000 hectares which is being developed as a sustainable rural economy for eco-tourism.  Created after the Revolution to replant the area which had suffered badly from deforestation, it is now a haven for migrating birds from the North.

On arrival we’ll visit the community then, after lunch, head for the San Juan River for a refreshing dip.   There’s also a zip-line course which soars over the forests and the community.  Tell your guide if you’d like to have a go – they can easily organize this for you!

It’s a perfect place to spend the day as a family, walking in the hills or swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the San Juan River.

Day 7: TRAVEL TO THE BAY OF PIGS AND SNORKEL IN THE CARIBBEAN

  • Casa Particular, Cienfuegos
  • Breakfast, Lunch

An early start so that we can make the most of the day.  After breakfast head for the highway and take the “autopista”, stopping along the journey to pick up a picnic lunch.

Late morning we arrive in Zapata Swamp National Park, a huge wetland inhabited by crocodiles and an amazing array of birdlife.  We’ll make a special stop to see the “zunzuncito” or bee hummingbird which is the world’s smallest bird and native to the area.  We’ll then carry on to the Bay of Pigs and stop for a picnic lunch and a swim in the clear Caribbean waters.   If you haven’t brought your own mask there’s a kiosk where you can hire one for the afternoon.

From there it’s a just over an hour to Cienfuegos on the South Coast and our stop for the night.  Cienfuegos a World Heritage Site and once a French settlement for immigrants from Bordeaux and Louisiana. The locals refer to it as ‘La Perla del Sur’ or the ‘Pearl of the South’ for its beauty and French inspired architecture.  There’s a beautiful malecon – or boardwalk – where locals enjoy the sea breezes and views across the bay towards the mountains.

Day 8: VISIT EL NICHO WATERFALL THEN HEAD TO TRINIDAD

  • Casa particular, Trinidad
  • Breakfast, Lunch

We leave Cienfuegos and head up into the Escambray Mountains, Cuba’s second highest mountain range.   Today’s adventure takes us into the lush tropical forest to discover El Nicho, a beautiful waterfall on the Rio Hanabanilla which is reached by a short trail.   Bring your swimsuit and jump into natural pools along the trail.

After a picnic lunch we continue to Trinidad, one of the most famous of Cuba’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.   Possibly the best preserved of colonial towns it offers stunning views from virtually every angle with its rows of pastel coloured houses, cobbled streets and pretty squares.  Old Cadillacs and horse-drawn carriages leave you feeling like you really have been whisked back to place where time has stood still.  Playa Ancon, an 8 km white sandy beach is only a short 15-minute drive from the town centre and in the evenings the place really comes alive with live music played in the  the many mainly open air bars and restaurants centred around the town’s two main squares. We check into our local accommodation on arrival and take a tour of Trinidad town (dinner not included).

Day 9: FREE DAY IN TRINIDAD

  • Casa particular, Trinidad
  • Breakfast

Today is free to spend at your leisure exploring Trinidad or relaxing by the beach.

Spend the morning exploring the handicrafts markets or spend the day at the beach!  Or you can take a trekking or horse-riding trip into the mountains surrounding the town stopping off at a waterfall for lunch.

Day 10: TREK IN THE MOUNTAINS AND VISIT CHE GUEVARA'S MAUSOLEUM

  • Casa Particular, Santa Clara
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast , we say good by to Trinidad and head back up into the Escambray Mountains, a steep drive to Topes de Collantes about one hour from Trinidad.  We then switch into a jeep or truck to go deep into the forest where we begin the Guanayara trail, passing fruit and coffee plantations.    You’re likely to spot Cuba’s colourful national bird – the Tocororo – with its black, red, white and blue plumage.    Halfway through the trail we come to El Rocio waterfall and a gorgeous natural pool where you can have a swim and jump off the rocks.

We stop for lunch in a simple country restaurant, and then continue our journey to Santa Clara, about 2 hours away by bus.   Santa Clara was the site of the last battle of the Cuban Revolution. In December 1958, Che Guevara and his troops ambushed an armoured train carrying arms to Santiago de Cuba and this was a major turning point in the Revolution. We visit the Mausoleum of Che Guevara and the museum that has many of his former belongings and is a fascinating insight into one of the 20th Century’s most revered icons.

Day 11: TO VARADERO

  • All inclusive hotel, Varadero
  • Breakfast, Lunch , Dinner

In the morning check out of your casa early and drive to Varadero.  This 10km white sand beach is Cuba’s prime resort and has long been a popular destination for both Cubans and tourists alike.   You’ll be arriving in time for lunch, and you’ll be free to enjoy the beach and other services while you wait for check-in.

Varadero is a beach paradise with white sand where you can unwind and enjoy some family time by the beach. The hotel offers all-inclusive accommodation.

Free day to relax on the beach.
