From Hiking Trails to Dive Spots: Cuba’s Best Adventure Experiences

Hiking trail near a river in Cuba

Cuba has always been a paradise for people who love sun-drenched beaches, reguetón beats and “latino-americano” towns buzzing with life, but Cuba is also the perfect destination for thrill seekers. From  majestic mountain ranges to crystal clear Caribbean waters, this country offers everything to satisfy your inner adrenaline junkie!   Whether you want to climb the limestone cliffs in Viñales Valley, or plunge into the transparent depths of the Bay of Pigs, or cycle through lush sugar cane fields near Trinidad –  we can promise breathtaking adventures through the wild beauty of Cuba. Here are some adventure to explore on the island.

  1. Hiking Adventures

    Sierra Maestra Mountains

The Sierra Maestra Mountains are home to some of Cuba’s most spectacular hiking trails as well as being the cradle of Cuba’s Revolutionary history.  This was where Fidel Castro and his men made their hideout while planning the 1959 Revolution.   Hiking through the lush tropical vegetation and the many historical landmarks found on the Comandancia de la Plata trail, take you deep into Cuba’s culture.  The majestic beauty along this route combines with its historical significance – you’ll literally walk in Fidel Castro’s footsteps.

    El Yunque in Baracoa

Located in Eastern Cuba, El Yunque is the anvil-shaped mountain which has become a symbol of Baracoa’s natural beauty.  Christopher Columbus first landed here in 1492 and declared Cuba “the most beautiful land man has ever seen”.  A bit of marketing, perhaps, to keep his sponsors keen!  But if you take this challenging climb you’ll probably agree with him, as you’re rewarded with fantastic views across virgin forest and mountain rivers.  This route goes deep into the most biodiverse area in Cuba.  Expect to see the beautifully striped polymita snail, exotic birdlife and lush tropical forests.

    Topes de Collante
Just a short drive from the charming World Heritage town of Trinidad, Topes de Collante National Park offers hikers a slice of paradise with its cool microclimate, diverse trails and breathtaking waterfalls.  Explore the lush greenery, look out for Cuba’s national bird , the Tocororo,  and jump into the refreshing waterfalls that make this destination a hiker’s dream.

Visit Topes de Collante’s fabulous waterfalls with our Western and Central Cuba Hike.

  2. Water-Based Adventures

Scuba Diving Gardens of the Queen
For those who seek the thrill of underwater exploration, the Gardens of the Queen archipelago is a trip of a lifetime. Although remote, this Marine Protected Area boasts some of the Caribbean’s best diving spots.  The area has been so well protected that vibrant coral reefs are more intact than anywhere else in the Caribbean, and marine life thrives.   Dive with sharks and goliath groupers in one of the most pristine underwater environments in the region.

    Snorkelling in Bay of Pigs
Easily accessible and brimming with marine life, the Bay of Pigs is ideal for snorkelling enthusiasts. The clear, calm waters and well-designed access points mean that the colourful coral heads are just a short swim from land.   Stop at Cueva de los Peces cenote, or inland sink hole, full of tropical fish.  This destination offers a laid-back snorkelling or diving opportunities perfect for all skill levels.

    Kayaking in Zapata Swamp

Head to the quiet waters of the Zapata Swamp for a peaceful kayaking experience, unlike any other water adventure.  While paddling through mangrove forests, one can enjoy serene waterways and look out for bird species and other animals typical of this unusual wetland environment.  You’re likely to spot the zunzuncito ( or bee hummingbird ) , the world’s smallest bird!

Go snorkelling and kayaking on our Cuba Active Adventure.

  3. Rock Climbing and Caving

    Viñales

Viñales is simply a heaven on earth for rock climbers. The geography of the region provides Jurassic landscapes and “mogote” mountains that seem to bubble out of the valley floor.   The mogotes are popular with local rock climbers who enjoy showing off their expertise.

If climbing’s not your thing, Viñales offers dozens of beautiful hiking trails past farms and along the valley floor,  through the mogotes.  Viñales Valley is a World Heritage Site and is where Cuba’s finest tobacco is grown.

    Cueva de Santo Tomás

Dive into the depths of Cuba’s largest caves; Cueva de Santo Tomás.  Local speleologists will take you on an underground tour to explore this vast cave system over 3 levels.  Don your hard hat and wear comfortable trainers to discover vast underground halls, interesting rock formations and ancient riverbeds.

  4. Wildlife and Eco-Tours

    Zapata Swamp

Bird lovers swarm to the Zapata Swamp ( known locally as Ciénaga de Zapata) due to its rich endemic and migrating birdlife.  This is home to the world’s smallest bird ( the bee hummingbird aka zunzuncito ) and there’s a good chance you’ll see flamingos, the Cuban tody, pygmy owls and Cuban black hawks.   The shy Cuban crocodile is endemic to the area too!

    Alejandro de Humboldt National Park

Alejandro de Humboldt National Park is one of the world’s most biodiverse tropical areas in the world.  Guided tours to the park will only scratch the surface, but you’ll experience its various ecosystems and see and amazing array of plant and animal life including tree dwelling lizards and frogs, the colourfal and endangered polymita snail and Cuba’s cute endemic rodent, the Hutia. This remote park, with its abundant flora and fauna, is one of the best places to enjoy Cuba’s pristine biodiversity.

  5. Cycling

    Cycling Tours
We might be biased but we’re convinced that Cuba’s varied terrain makes it a fantastic destination for cycling!   The roads may have a few potholes but there’s very little traffic and you can explore both urban and rural areas in relative peace and quiet.   You’ll share the road with Cuba’s classic vintage cars in the city , or cycle alongside horse-drawn carts in rural areas.  Whether you’re exploring the countryside, towns or Cuba’s coastal roads, cycling offers a unique perspective on the island.

    Bikepacking

For more adventurous and independent travellers, bikepacking is a great way to explore Cuba.  Discover less trodden paths on your self-guided bikepacking tour across Cuba while enjoying its natural beauty at your own pace.

    Road Cycling

Roadies will be rewarded by Cuba’s amazing variety of terrain.  If it’s hills you want to climb, head for Viñales or Topes de Collante, or explore both!   This is a great destination for gravel bikers and those who love going off the beaten track.

    Guided Cycle Tours
Guided cycle tours  are Cubania Travel’s lifeblood! We think a human-powered, two-wheeled adventure is the best way to get to know Cubans and to see Cuba’s amazing scenery. These tours take you off the main roads and into the heart of Cuba’s hidden gems.

  6. Horseback Riding

Viñales and Valle de los Ingenios provide scenic spots for horseback riding, where you can enjoy picturesque landscapes and tranquil rides. We’d recommend Finca La Lima near Trinidad, where you can ride to a creek for a refreshing swim before tasting an organic home-cooked meal.

Brush up your riding skills in Viñales and visit Finca La Lima on our Family Beach and Culture Trip.
