June sees World Cup fever hitting Cuba. They may not have qualified but that doesn’t stop Cubans from getting passionately into the world’s greatest sporting event. This month’s issue is dedicated to the triumph of sport in Cuba. Not just in its legendary athletes, such as Félix Savón Fabré, but in the way in which Cuba’s sports model—one of inclusion and participation—runs from the smallest kids in Old Havana through the endless playing fields at Ciudad Deportiva (Sports City) to the Olympic podium.

Thanks to Miles Davis for letting us look through the eyes of a Cuban skater (A través de los ojos de un patinador cubano)—the accompanying video from Humanity TV is simply brilliant. Issac Eger’s almost nostalgic look at playing stickball on Havana’s streets will remind all those in North American cities what they have lost with material progress.

If fishing is your thing, don’t miss this month’s Hemingway tournament, and if catching marlin is too grand, check in with Mike Marecki at CubaWelcome to go bonefishing in Las Salinas. Both world class options. For those who prefer getting under the water, the underwater photography competition at María la Gorda is a must.

If you like music, you will be spoilt this month with the II Encuentro de Jóvenes Pianistas, visit of legendary Japanese composer Yoshikazu Fukumura and the Festival Internacional Boleros de Oro. In art, if you haven’t seen the exhibition Miradas at Factoría Habana, make it a mission to do so. In the ballet world, if you haven’t seen Swan Lake yet, you probably should stick to beer and football, but who knows, you may like this excellent version by Alicia Alonso’s company.

Do check out our expanded Havana Guide, which is growing to accommodate the new bars, restaurants and casas particulares that continue to spring forth adding vitality and energy to Havana’s entertainment and hospitality scene.
