August in Cuba is a steaming month of long hot summer days full of humidity and with the off afternoon shower thrown in for good measure. It is also the month when Cubans finally admit that it is warm enough for the beach and they decamp from Havana to the beaches known as Playas del Este. Following the Boy Scouts motto, they come prepared with picnic hampers, tents and enough paraphernalia to sink a small ship.
In this issue we pack our bucket and spade and take you to the best beaches in Cuba, lingering in Cuba’s most famous resort town of Varadero to see what a million tourists a year see in this idyllic peninsula. If you have the energy, then maybe you should kit up with the Caribbean Kite School in Varadero or head up into the skies over Jibacoa with Reynaldo Prendes’s paragliding club.
Back in Havana, August offers a music smorgasbord with everything from the Timbalaye Rumba Festival (Aug 17-24), to the Havana Carnival (Aug 8-17 – weekends only) and Brutal Fest’s 2014 Cuba Festival (Aug 15-24). Personally I can’t wait to see the charming French band Dead Cowboy’s Sluts. Raúl Paz plays at month end, August 30 in Teatro Karl Marx.
If you like theatre, this month offers two treats. Bent, produced by the brilliant and enigmatic Stephen Bayly (showing all month at Bertolt Brecht), and Hamlet by Shakespeare’s Globe Theater (Aug 7).
Do check out our expanded Havana Guide, which is growing to accommodate the new bars, restaurants and casas particulares that continue to spring forth adding vitality and energy to Havana’s entertainment and hospitality scene.
